The artist in an interview with art historian Ruth Polleit Riechert about her current solo show at artspace NEXUS.
Sophie Heinrich was born in Cologne in 1991. In 2017, she has completed her studies of Fine Art as master student of Elizabeth Peyton at Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. Before joining the Peyton class in 2015, she studied with Tal R from 2012 to 2014 and with Stefan Kürten and Enrico David from 2014 to 2015. Her works have already been exhibited in Düsseldorf, Cologne, Berlin and Amsterdam, and Mallorca. In March 2020 she has created a show for artspace NEXUS. Here is our conversation about her new works:
What was most important for your artistic career in 2019?
Last year I visited New York which is extremely important for every artist — especially if dealing with abstract painting. Just think of the great abstract painters of the 1940s and 1950s whose works are shown in large numbers in the museums there, which is unique in its abundance and quality worldwide.
And, of course, dealing with not only contemporary ones, but also historical approaches positions is essential for the steady development of my work.
What is the title of your current exhibition at NEXUS and why?
I never give my pictures any titles because they might influence the individual contemplation. I really like it when the viewer directly deals with my art as impartially as possible. That’s why I don’t give an exhibition a title either.
What do you want to express with your art?
My painting results from process-based work. The pictures arise from large gestures and over long periods of time. The most exciting question for myself is for every painting is when I can designate it as “finished”. There is no narrative in my works like in figurative art.
What are your plans for 2020?
I working on large wall surfaces, made up of several individual pictures. Spaces change fundamentally when a wall is completely covered with such a painting tableau. Thats what I’m interested right now and where I will continue to experiment and develop this idea.
