Cracks on the Canvas: ELISA CARUTTIS Creations Come out of Destruction

The artist in an interview with art historian Ruth Polleit Riechert about her current solo show “Crysalis" at ARTSPACE NEXUS.

Elisa, the name of your show for ARTSPACE NEXUS is “Chrysalis”. Why have you chosen this title?
Chrysalis refers to the life stage of some insects undergoing transformation between immature and mature stages. As well as recalling my paintings in terms of subject matter, I found it right for the moment we are living. The show is the result of the first lockdown restrictions when I was mostly at home and to compensate the lack of my studio and painting I have been drawings flowers on my agenda (see below). Whilst outside the city was suffering, I was fascinated by the nature’s flourishing in spring and wanted to record it daily. There was something so honest in portraying the nature during those particular days, but also intimate and universal that I felt bringing farther in the form of a show.
After you graduated from Slade School in London you went back to Italy in 2019 How have your experiences from UK influenced you and what was the result of bringing together different cultures in your art?
Even if I am back to live in my own country I kept getting inspired by other cultures’, it’s hard in the contemporary world to not embrace the variety of it. For example, while I was working for this show I had a book about aboriginal art in the studio that I looked at while I was working. Their paintings are maps of the territory they live and I find that their way of observing the nature from the farthest point of view to the microscopic is something in common with me. Whereas, studying in the UK helped me develop a rational approach to my work that combined with the most “passional” Italian way gave me more instruments to face the complexity of this world.
Your style is very classical, but only by first sight. If you look closer the canvas or paper is not smooth but has cracks on it. Please explain your technique and what you want to say with your art.
Yes, exactly. The cracks on the canvas are due to the glue that holds together the different linen’ pieces of which the painting is made of, giving to the surface subtle relives and a “rough” touch at the same time. It took time and many experiments to develop this technique but now I am happy about it because it gives to my work the concreteness I was looking for.
Holding together different pieces of the canvas I previously destroyed, reflects the idea that creation comes out from the act of destruction and the artist, like a restorer, has the task of bringing together all the broken pieces and give them a new life.
How have you spent your last year with the pandemic and has there been any positive outcomes for yourself?
I had a bit of a stop in my work last year like many art workers in Italy. Some shows planned for 2020 had been postponed and suddenly, like everyone else I guess, I had to adapt to the new uncertainty. At first, I took the time-off at home to draw and realize how good is to take a rest from the painting whilst, at the same time, dedicating more time to drawing. There is something almost meditative about it that helps to reflect both on the work done and in developing new ideas without the pressure you can have in painting. After the first lockdown was finished, being back to the studio with less distractions like openings or events, it was a good opportunity to focus fully on the painting and helped me achieve new results of which I am really happy about.
What are your plans for this year?
I will be back on a series of prints I made many years ago that never changed from their first version. As they are one of my most iconic works, I felt I risked to renew them but it’s time to bring the printing language farther and finding out new contemporary ways of interpreting it. Also, I am very excited because the show will be held at Gate 44 in Milan which is the print room where I make them. It will be an unconventional space to hold a show but I think it will be interesting for people to visit it and get more familiar with the traditional printing techniques that sadly most of the people ignore but, instead, they are so fascinating. Finally, from a more romantic point of view I will get marry and this brings another positive note for this 2021!

Elisa Carutti was born in Milan in 1991. She owns a BA Degree in Painting from the Academy of Fine Arts of Brera, Milan (2014), and a MFA from Slade School of Fine Arts, UCL, London (2018). Her work has been exhibited in UK, Italy, France and Greece. She received several awards (e.g. ERASMUS Bursary at Ecole Nationale Superieure de Beaux Arts in Paris in 2013) and took part in residencies abroad. Her works were exhibited and published internationally.

Risse auf der Leinwand – Elisa CaruttiS Bilder entstehen aus Der Zerstörung
Die Künstlerin in einem Interview mit der Kunsthistorikerin Dr. Ruth Polleit Riechert über ihre aktuelle Solo-Show “Crysalis" im ARTSPACE NEXUS.
Elisa, der Name Deiner Ausstellung für ARTSPACE NEXUS ist "Chrysalis". Warum hast Du diesen Titel gewählt?
Chrysalis bezieht sich auf das Lebensstadium einiger Insekten, die eine Transformation zwischen unreifem und reifem Stadium durchlaufen. Er erinnert mich nicht nur thematisch an meine Bilder, sondern passt auch zu dem Moment, in dem wir leben. Die Ausstellung ist das Ergebnis der ersten Abriegelungsbeschränkungen, als ich größtenteils zu Hause war, und um das Fehlen meines Ateliers und der Malerei zu kompensieren, habe ich Blumen auf meine Agenda gezeichnet (siehe unten). Während draußen die Stadt litt, war ich fasziniert vom Aufblühen der Natur im Frühling und wollte es täglich festhalten. Es lag etwas so Ehrliches darin, die Natur während dieser besonderen Tage zu porträtieren, aber auch etwas Intimes und Universelles, dass ich das Gefühl hatte, es in Form einer Ausstellung weiter zu bringen.
Nachdem Du Deinen Abschluss an der Slade School in London gemacht haben, bist Du 2019 zurück nach Italien gegangen. Wie haben Dich Deine Erfahrungen aus Großbritannien beeinflusst und Deine Kunst beeinflusst?
Auch wenn ich wieder in meinem eigenen Land lebe, lasse ich mich immer wieder von anderen Kulturen inspirieren, denn in der heutigen Welt ist es schwer, die Vielfalt nicht zu umarmen. Während ich für diese Ausstellung arbeitete, hatte ich zum Beispiel ein Buch über die Kunst der Aborigines im Studio, das ich mir während der Arbeit ansah. Ihre Bilder sind Landkarten des Territoriums, in dem sie leben, und ich finde, dass ihre Art, die Natur vom weitesten Blickwinkel bis hin zum Mikroskopischen zu beobachten, etwas mit mir gemeinsam hat. Das Studium in Großbritannien hat mir hingegen geholfen, eine rationale Herangehensweise an meine Arbeit zu entwickeln, die mir in Kombination mit der "leidenschaftlichen" italienischen Art mehr Instrumente gibt, um der Komplexität dieser Welt zu begegnen.
Dein Stil ist sehr klassisch, aber nur auf den ersten Blick. Wenn man genauer hinsieht, ist die Leinwand oder das Papier nicht glatt, sondern hat Risse. Erkläre bitte Deine Technik und was Du mit Deiner Kunst aussagen wollen.
Ja, genau. Die Risse auf der Leinwand entstehen durch den Kleber, der die verschiedenen Leinenstücke, aus denen das Bild besteht, zusammenhält und der Oberfläche ein subtiles Relief und gleichzeitig einen "rauen" Touch verleiht. Es hat Zeit und viele Experimente gebraucht, um diese Technik zu entwickeln, aber jetzt bin ich glücklich darüber, weil sie meiner Arbeit die Konkretheit gibt, die ich gesucht habe.
Das Zusammenhalten verschiedener Teile der Leinwand, die ich zuvor zerstört habe, spiegelt die Idee wider, dass die Schöpfung aus dem Akt der Zerstörung hervorgeht und der Künstler, wie ein Restaurator, die Aufgabe hat, alle zerbrochenen Teile zusammenzubringen und ihnen ein neues Leben zu geben.
Wie hast Du Dein letztes Jahr mit der Pandemie verbracht und gab es irgendwelche positiven Ergebnisse?
Ich hatte im letzten Jahr einen kleinen Stopp in meiner Arbeit, wie viele Kunstschaffende in Italien. Einige für 2020 geplante Ausstellungen wurden verschoben und plötzlich musste ich mich, wie wohl jeder andere auch, an die neue Ungewissheit anpassen. Zuerst habe ich die Auszeit zu Hause zum Zeichnen genutzt und gemerkt, wie gut es ist, sich vom Malen zu erholen und gleichzeitig mehr Zeit dem Zeichnen zu widmen. Es hat etwas fast Meditatives an sich, das hilft, sowohl über die geleistete Arbeit nachzudenken als auch neue Ideen zu entwickeln, ohne den Druck, den man beim Malen haben kann. Nachdem der erste Lockdown beendet war, zurück im Atelier zu sein, mit weniger Ablenkungen wie Eröffnungen oder Veranstaltungen, war eine gute Gelegenheit, sich voll und ganz auf die Malerei zu konzentrieren und half mir, neue Ergebnisse zu erzielen, über die ich sehr glücklich bin.
Was sind Deine Pläne für dieses Jahr?
Ich werde wieder an einer Serie von Drucken arbeiten, die ich vor vielen Jahren gemacht habe und die sich seit ihrer ersten Version nie verändert haben. Da sie eine meiner ikonischsten Arbeiten sind, wollte ich es riskieren, sie zu erneuern, aber es ist an der Zeit, die Drucksprache weiter zu bringen und neue, zeitgenössische Wege der Interpretation zu finden. Außerdem bin ich sehr aufgeregt, weil die Ausstellung im Gate 44 in Mailand stattfinden wird, dem Druckraum, in dem ich sie herstelle. Es wird ein unkonventioneller Raum sein, um eine Ausstellung zu veranstalten, aber ich denke, es wird für die Leute interessant sein, ihn zu besuchen und sich mit den traditionellen Drucktechniken vertraut zu machen, die leider von den meisten Leuten ignoriert werden, dabei sind sie so faszinierend. Schließlich werde ich aus einem eher romantischen Blickwinkel heraus heiraten, und das bringt eine weitere positive Note für dieses 2021!

Elisa Carutti wurde 1991 in Mailand geboren. Sie hat ihr Studium der Malerei an der Akademie der Schönen Künste in Brera, Mailand (2014) mit einem BA abgeschlossen und erwarb einen MFA an der Slade School of Fine Arts, UCL, London (2018). Ihre Arbeiten wurden in Großbritannien, Italien, Frankreich und Griechenland ausgestellt. Sie erhielt mehrere Auszeichnungen (z.B. ERASMUS-Stipendium an der Ecole Nationale Superieure de Beaux Arts in Paris 2013) und nahm an Residenzen im Ausland teil. Ihre Arbeiten wurden international veröffentlicht.
