About the Book

The international art market has never been more accessible – and, at the same time, rarely more complex.

The Ultimate Guide to the Art Market provides a practical understanding of how today’s art market works. Dr Ruth Polleit Riechert combines art historical research with many years of professional experience in the art market, the financial industry and independent art advisory.

The book explains how galleries, auction houses, art fairs, online platforms and private sales operate. It explores collecting strategies, pricing, valuation, authenticity and the growing role of digital technologies, artificial intelligence and blockchain in the art market.

The English edition is suitable for newcomers as well as experienced collectors, art lovers, museum visitors, students and professionals in the art world.

Why This Title Belongs in Bookshops and Museum Shops

Museum and gallery visitors often want to extend their engagement with art beyond the exhibition itself. The Ultimate Guide to the Art Market does not focus on individual artists or movements, but explains how the art world and the international art market function today.

The book complements classic museum and art publications by adding a practical perspective: it connects art appreciation, collecting and a deeper understanding of the contemporary art market.

A very successful book: packed with important information and facts, yet written in a way that is accessible, especially for readers without prior art market knowledge. I particularly like the many elements that lighten the text, such as the interview boxes, the historical definition of art and your own experiences. This makes reading enjoyable.

Prof Dr Thomas Garms, Publisher and Editor-in-Chief, Materialist Magazine
